Yves Saint Laurent was one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century, who revolutionized the industry with his ready-to-wear collections, androgynous styles, and iconic creations such as the tuxedo suit for women. He also had a passion for perfume, which he considered as an essential accessory and a way of expressing one’s personality. He launched his first fragrance, Y, in 1964, followed by the legendary Rive Gauche in 1971, which embodied the spirit of liberation and modernity of his fashion.
In 1977, he created Opium, a provocative and controversial oriental scent that caused a sensation and became a bestseller. He continued to explore different olfactory territories with fragrances such as Kouros, Paris, Jazz, and M7, always reflecting his vision of elegance, sophistication, and seduction. He collaborated with some of the most renowned perfumers in the world, such as Jean-Louis Sieuzac, Sophia Grojsman, Jacques Cavallier, and Alberto Morillas.
After his retirement in 2002, the YSL brand was acquired by Gucci Group (now Kering), and continued to produce new fragrances under the creative direction of Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati, Hedi Slimane, and Anthony Vaccarello. Some of the most successful launches include Black Opium, Mon Paris, L’Homme, La Nuit de L’Homme, and Libre. The brand also offers a collection of exclusive fragrances called Le Vestiaire des Parfums, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic garments.
Today, YSL is one of the most prestigious and influential names in the world of perfume, with a rich and diverse portfolio of scents that celebrate the legacy of its founder and the values of freedom, creativity, and innovation that he championed. The brand’s motto is “Dare to be yourself”, inviting its customers to express their individuality and style through its fragrances.
